In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, in order that we, who were the first to hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. Ephesians 1:11-12
When you hear the term “used by God,” who do you think of? For some, television pastors or Mother Teresa might come to mind. For others, they may think of a specific example of someone in their life who went out of their way to make a difference.
Being used by God is rarely some big public display of power. Each of us, every day, channel God’s power and are used by Him in small ways, whether we realize it or not. Every smile given, offering our help to strangers, giving an encouraging word, or saying a silent prayer – these are all ways in which God’s power can flow through us.
However, allowing yourself to be used by God isn’t always easy. It also means getting out of your comfort zone – like making a hospital visit, picking up the phone to offer encouragement to someone, or opening up about your own personal struggles to someone going through something similar.
As you stretch yourself, it is good to remember you are not alone – God is right there with you, and He will give you what you need at just the right time to be effectively used. And at that time, it’s also good to forget – forget your fears, your apprehensions, and your preferences. Think only of the people in front of you – their needs, their hurt, and their longing hearts.
God can use you in any circumstance, in any way, even if you don’t know what to say. Maybe a child needs to laugh while you fumble with a child’s craft, or read a children’s book with a funny voice. Maybe a crying boy or hurting mother just needs you to sit next to them offering them the support they need just by your presence in the room. A smile, a hug, laughter, and a caring heart are all universal acts and can touch someone in unfathomable ways that we may never fully understand. There are no limits when you leave yourself open to God’s work and are willing to do whatever is required. There is no better way to be used. Are you up for it today?
Call to Action:
- Write down different things you can do throughout your day to channel God’s love and power to others. Anything from your attitude and honor as you drive, to smiling and greeting those in your path. Keeping an outward focus is an important step when desiring to be used by God.
- Allow God to use you His way – which could be worlds apart from how you thought you would be utilized in this life. Stay open to His still small voice.
- Pray and ask God to help you recognize those opportunities where you can step up and be used to channel His love to someone else today.
Dear Lord, I know we are supposed to be used for your glory, but sometimes I think I am too busy taking care of myself that I miss your still small voice. Thank you for wanting to work through me to touch the lives of others, and please help me to seize those opportunities that you bring my way. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
